“Laurent Fauconnier is seeking for almost imperceptible colors, taint, water that leaves traces, superposed to the black inks and their subtleties. The poetic of this artist is slowly built up, he is a measured artist, advancing calmly, his eyes awake…” July 1992, La Havana José Omar Torres Director of National Art Institute “Taller de Grafica de la Habana”
Laurent Fauconnier practices woodcutting since 1980 as a formative technique. Currently he print these matrix on canvases and he installs textile pillar-sculptures in the space. Parallel to it, he practices so diverse forms of art as the performance or the fresco. His interest for the spiritual aspect of art pushed him toward the research on ancient techniques like lime painting.
He experiments with natural materials found in the environment as pebbles, wood, tree, fire, and natural pigments. In his artistic conception, the use and transformation of materials directly taken from the environment are as important as the final work of art. Through such a creative process the soul of the artist is transformed and by identification, the soul of the viewer can also undergo a similar transformation. In such a creative process the sites in which he acts and the energies that emanate from it, are central. He utilizes the tree as archetypal symbol of life and of the relation between human being and nature. He uses performance and installation as experimental creative process in constant evolution.
He held personal exhibitions in France, Italy, Korea, Latin America and Norway.
Workshops and artist residences often integrate his exhibitions. These are meeting places for experimentation and acquisition of various techniques that the artist practices through his work. Many times he also held workshops-ateliers for children or/and youths.
He was educated at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, mainly at J.P. Granier’s engraving classes and ateliers, from 1981 to 1987, then to Jaques Vernière’s book and printing atelier in Paris. He also made the artist-book “The Magician of HLM”.
In the domain of body-art he followed the training “Approche corporel de l’expression plastique” at Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris. Moreover, he was assistant of Mr.Capelier in art-therapy ateliers at the Psychiatric Hospital St. Anne, Paris.
He also took part in several workshops of performative theater in Tuscany and Naples with the multiartist Antonio Neiwiller.
Since 1997 he also learned the spiritual approach and technique of ancient Byzantine icons, due to his interest for Sacred Art and his practice of restoration of ancient churches, clusters and frescos in the South of Italy and West France.
He moved to Tromsø, Norway in 1998, but he continued to travel and to attend international exhibitions since. Between 2003 and 2006 he entirely built a house-atelier in the fjords, made of massive wood from Lapland. It was built out of an ecological drive, in order to anchor his daily artistic practice to the very territory in which his family dwells. This gave him an extra knowledge about the arctic environment and a beautiful living and working place.
In 2002 he decorated with fresco technique 350 square-meters of the Church Santa Maria della Speranza in South Italy. This work is inspired by Armenian and Byzantine iconography.
Since 2007 he utilizes installations and performance as main artistic language in various projects and exhibitions.
He create in collaboration with ACT to In pulse, open studio practice for professional artists based on improvisation and collective creation. A place where contemporary dance, teater, music, visual art and new technologies can explore ways of interaction.
SOME WORDS ON MY ARTISTIC PRACTICE
“I work as an artist in the hope that people might connect again with what is important for the soul: a sensitivity to their own history and relation to the earth, from which they were born. I paint what’s lacking in our high technology-oriented life: feelings, spirituality, relation to the earthly, love. The places where I live have a particular importance for my inspiration. Each place is connected to a particular energy. The materials that I utilize are directly offered by the earth, and the graphic patterns I shape are inspired by organic and mineral forms. I use pigments that are often extracted from stones, rocks or plants and which I find myself in the wilderness. Apparently techniques are mostly correlated to the material domain: and even though I utilize substances like milk, lime, pigments, trees, clay, everything is played out in the subtle dimension of energy, of feelings. The work of a painter is often a struggle lived through in a chimerical space, but nevertheless very concrete. My work consists also in letting emerge some images from a primal chaos. So, I live a vital experience of transformation and the traces of this journey are the act of painting. I work installations and performances in the same spiritual and vital perspective. If human beings find again this ability to feel the connection to the Earth, they’ll understand what the act of cutting a tree may mean. They’ll hesitate even to displace a single stone…”
